Protein Hot Chocolate

What could be better than delicious, rich hot chocolate that actually helps your muscles recover from a tough workout? This protein hot chocolate is filling, sugar free, and healthful, but tastes very decadent. It is a great wintertime alternative to a cold protein shake or smoothie. The warm richness keeps you full for quite a while, so it is also a great liquid meal. Even though this protein hot chocolate is made from scratch it is rather simple to prepare. If you like, you can mix up the dry ingredients in a large quantity and store them in an airtight container in your kitchen for even quicker prep. The recipe makes one serving so if you want to mix a large quantity just multiply the ingredients by 6 or 12 and you’ll have enough for that many servings. This protein hot chocolate is a great way to enjoy a delicious chocolate indulgence that is sugar free, nutritious and satisfying! My kids love this hot chocolate too and they have no idea it is actually good for them! This is a recipe your whole family can enjoy!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 scoop protein powder (unsweetened) (I use grass-fed whey protein, use your fav)
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp monk fruit sweetener (or 1/2 tsp stevia)
  • 1 tsp vanilla bean paste or vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup hot water
  • 1 tbsp hot coffee (optional)
  • 1 cup almond milk, coconut milk, or other non-dairy milk of your choice

Instructions

  1. Measure all of the dry ingredients including the honey (if you are using it) into a small sauce pan. Place the sauce pan over low heat. Then whisk the dry ingredients together until well mixed.
  2. Slowly whisk in the hot water until a smooth paste is formed.
(This will make your hot chocolate nice and smooth).
Turn the heat under the pan up to medium-high and slowly whisk in the non-dairy milk and coffee (if you are using it).
  3. Whisk the liquid over medium-high heat until the mixture is hot, but not boiling. This will take 3-5 minutes approximately.
  4. Carefully transfer the mixture to a large mug and enjoy!

Notes

You can use this recipe to make peppermint hot chocolate by adding 1/2 tsp natural peppermint extract or a few drops of food grade peppermint essential oil.

You can make cinnamon hot chocolate by adding 1/2 tsp cinnamon to the dry ingredients at the beginning of the recipe.
